A Jar of Taco Seasoning
Oh, how I remember the days of those packages of taco seasoning my mom would pull out on a Tuesday evening to pair with the log of frozen ground beef, tortillas, shredded cheese, and lettuce. Taco Tuesdays were alive and well in the 90's, I can assure you that. I find myself drifting towards tacos for dinner when life feels too fast, too squeezed, like I can’t quite get a grip on the hours slipping through my fingers. Now, I reach for the jar of homemade taco seasoning to spoon over my grass-fed ground beef browning in the pan. The smell is better than any dinner bell I could ring, the kids come out of their rooms yelling, “tacos for dinnerrrr!” There’s something reassuring about that, their childhood filled with a bit of predictability, the kind that feels like a favorite pair of comfy pants that always fit just right. I make the homemade stuff because it’s too easy not to, too cost effective to outsource, and I love that it has mom’s fingerprint on it.
Ingredients:
Makes enough for a few taco nights, but you can always double, nay, triple the recipe!
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons smoked paprika
2 tablespoons dried oregano
1 tablespoon coconut sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon arrowroot powder
½ teaspoon chili powder or chipotle (use more or less depending on heat tolerance ;)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions:
Combine everything in a jar and give it a good shake! When you cook, I like to use 1 heaping tablespoon per pound of meat and about ¼ cup of water or broth added to the pan to make it saucy.
