A Simple Cup of Hot Cocoa

Do you remember those packets of Swiss Miss hot cocoa with the hard little marshmallows included? Yea, me too. I would microwave my mug of water and pour that packet in, stirring with gusto watching the foam rise slowly to the top as the hard outer layer of the marshmallows melted. It didn’t matter that it tasted like little more than sweet hot brown water, it was the experience that did it for me. I love to recreate that feeling for my children, but with slightly more homemade vibes. We often have a small sunrise snack (like hot cocoa and marshmallows!) before turning our attention to the kitchen for a hot breakfast. This gives our bodies a hit of nourishment to keep up our blood sugar from dipping too drastically while still allowing us to savor a slow morning. This hot cocoa is our go to recipe!

Ingredients:

Makes 1 serving

¼ cup boiling water

1 teaspoon cacao powder

(here’s my favorite)

1 tablespoon maple syrup, more or less depending on your tastes

1 ½ cups of whole milk

Directions:

In a small saucepan or a milk frother (here’s the one we use every single morning!) warm the milk. While that warms, scoop the cacao powder and maple syrup into a mug, stirring to create a chocolatey syrup. Pour the boiling water over top and give it a hardy stir to dissolve the cocoa powder into the hot water. The milk should be nice and warm at this point. If you have a milk frother it will be nice and frothy to pour over top, if you’re using a sauce pan you can use a whisk to briskly whip up a froth. Pour over top of the hot water cacao mixture and enjoy!
